Why I Don't Write About Security

26 Jan 2024 | ~2 minute read

If you don't know, I work in the InfoSec / cyber / whatever you want to call it industry. So why don't I write about InfoSec here on this blog?

If you take a look through my blogroll, there's lots of cool people, writing cool stuff, often about what they're passion about, and what they do for a living. For many, these are one and the same. And that's true for me, too.

I love what I do for a living; I'm a passionate cyber security professional. So why don't I write about it here on the blog?

Well, I kinda do. I occasionally write posts that are tangentially related to what I spend many, many hours every week doing, but you're unlikely to find posts here about the latest breaches, leadership, or trends in the cyber security space.

This is my hobby

Yes, I'm a cyber professional. Yes, I'm a leader. Yes, I love what I do for a living. But I'm far more than that.

I use this site to explore my hobbies, like reading, exploring other cool blogs, or web design and development.

What I don't want to do is burn myself out. I like to keep my hobbies and my career separate and by doing this, I think I enjoy them both more.

I can enjoy the cyber and leadership aspects of my life during the day, then enjoy the web, a good book, my motorbikes, or my watch collection during my down time.

Without the separation between these two part of my life, I think I'd burn myself out. Not only with work, but with my hobbies too. By compartmentalising them, I have a set amount of time for both, which means I don't overdo it, and ruin my enjoyment (something which I'm prone to doing).

Final thoughts

So, dear reader, you're unlikely to read about InfoSec here. But that doesn't mean I'm not interested in it, I just like to focus on other things as the topics for this blog.

InfoSec is a booming industry, and by writing about it, I'd probably get way more readers. But this blog isn't about building myself a professional profile online. It's about being part of a community of fellow bloggers, sharing my thoughts/opinions and exploring my hobbies.
