My Thoughts on the Fosstodon Drama

Lots of people have been asking myself and Mike for a statement on the recent drama surrounding Fosstodon. This is **MY** statement.

I want to stress that this is my own opinion. This is in no way an official statement from Fosstodon, and I'm not speaking on behalf of Mike or the rest of the team here.

The TL;DR is that I'm done with Fosstodon.

I'm done with the drama, the constant name calling and abuse, the stress, the late nights, the whole thing. The fact of the matter is, by moving away from Fosstodon I'll have more free time, far less stress, and more money in the bank. No brainer, really.

I still don't know if I'm going to step away from the entire Fedi, or just move to another instance. I'm still noodling on that one.

This post by Corey Snipes is well worth a read if you want the balanced opinion of someone who took the time to look into the issue properly, instead of making assumptions. I really appreciate Corey's thoughts and I wish him luck on Hacyderm - it's a great instance.

Finally, I want to confirm that the moderator in question has deleted his account and left the moderation team.

I've had this post in my drafts for a couple days now and it's gone through multiple iterations, but I've decided not to elaborate further. I'm so tired of it all. I'm done.

I don't know what Mike is planning yet, but we committed to giving at least 3 months notice before shutting down. So if Mike decides to step away too, Fosstodon won't disappear overnight.

The last point I'll make is this - the fedi is supposed to be a friendly, welcoming online space, right? But the fact is, it isn't. It's just like everywhere else online - the vocal minority are just as loud, and just as obnoxious as everywhere else.

I'd like to say it's been a fun 8 years, but it hasn't. I was fun for the first 3 years or so. After that, it's been pretty much shit, to varying degrees, the entire time. ✌🏻
