The Wild Robot

Author: Peter Brown
Genre: Children's Fiction
Released: 2016
Rating: ★★★☆☆

When robot Roz washes ashore on a wild, remote island, she has no purpose and no instructions. Gradually she learns to survive among the animals — and ends up adopting an orphaned gosling named Brightbill. A warm, beautifully written story about identity, belonging, and nature that works equally well as a children's bedtime read or a quiet adult novel.

A friend of mine recommended the film version of this after going to watch it with his daughters, but I knew I had the books on the bookshelf and wanted to read them to the kids.

We recently finished the first book and it's really good - the kids were hooked from the start and although it has some dark part to the book (which I think is appropriate as it's all part of nature) it's still a great one to read to the kids.

🚨 SPOILERS ON THE DARK PARTS AHEAD 🚨

There's a part in the book where winter hits and it's really cold. So cold that a number of animals freeze to death in the snow. Lots of the animals comment on how they've never witnessed such a cold winter

This, I think, is a great precursor to broader conversations with the kids about climate change and how we're fucking the planet up.

All in all, the kids didn't seem too upset by the animals freezing to death though.

We've taken book 2 The Wild Robot Escapes off the shelf and we will be starting that one straight away. If you want a great, heartwarming, book to read with the kids, or on your own, The Wild Robot is a great choice.
